  • The 2026 AI Consumer Insights Report is here. AI Spotlight Report is here. Get the full report here for deeper insight into the growing demand for transparency, control, and ethical AI.
  • Concerns about the "AI control problem," bias, and sustainability are driving new tech expectations.
  • Users want AI that supports decision-making, instead of overriding it.

AI isn’t some futuristic sci-fi concept anymore. It’s in your search bar, your inbox, your notes app, your group chats. The tools keep getting smarter and people are getting pickier. No one’s staging a revolt against AI. They just want it to chill out a bit, be clearer about what it’s doing, and actually make life easier. In other words, we don’t want more AI. We want better AI.

As we looked ahead to 2026, we stopped asking what AI can do. We asked what people actually want it to do for them.

So we surveyed 1,000 consumers across North America. We wanted to understand how AI shapes productivity, trust, and digital habits. How often are you using it? Where does it help? Where does it cross a line?

The 2026 State of Browsing Report is here

What’s causing digital burnout? The 2026 State of Browsing Report reveals our browsing habits are taking a toll, what’s next for AI browsers—and why 81% of users are ready to switch their browser.

The core tension: Users want AI, but with an off-switch

Bridging the generational divide

The future of AI is being shaped by a generational split. Younger, tech-first users value speed and flexibility but are quick to call out AI when it feels too dominant or opaque. At the same time, older or less tech-savvy users are often left out of digital transformation altogether.

The data paints a fascinating picture. While 32% of users engage with AI daily, there's a growing concern around the AI control problem. People are asking important questions: How is this information being generated? What happens to my data? Can I turn this off? These concerns directly shape the future of AI tools and influence key technology trends in 2026.

Trust: The real battleground

Trust in AI is a growing concern. While 60% of users say they trust AI to some extent, 58% worry that it shapes their opinions behind the scenes. Add to this the fact that 81% are concerned about how their data is used, and future AI tools must prioritize transparency and accountability. Systems must assist users, not override their decisions, to build lasting trust.

This is where the conversation about human-centered AI design becomes critical. The future doesn't belong to the most powerful AI, but to the one that best serves human needs. Users are demanding transparency and the ability to customize their digital environments.

Sustainability and AI's energy footprint

Sustainability is becoming a top priority for AI users, with 57% expressing concerns about the energy consumption of AI systems. The next generation of platforms must balance high performance with responsible resource management to meet these expectations.

The demand for intentional AI

The bottom line? Users aren't asking for more AI—they want better, more intentional AI. Our 2026 AI Consumer Insights Report found that while 53% of users believe AI improves their digital lives, 44% worry about unauthorized actions. This sets the stage for the next wave of AI innovation, where the focus shifts from raw capability to conscious control.

  • 53% of users say AI improves their experience, recognizing its value.
  • 44% are concerned about AI taking actions without their approval.
  • 81% are concerned about AI using their personal data.

Shift’s role in the AI future

At Shift, transparency, intentionality, and user control are at the heart of our design. Features like Spaces and Builder are crafted to empower users to stay ahead, remain focused, and take control of their digital experiences. As AI continues to evolve, platforms like Shift must lead the way in bridging gaps, building trust, and ensuring AI supports—not overwhelms—its users.

The takeaway is clear. Automation is a powerful tool, but loss of autonomy is a dealbreaker. As we integrate more complex tools into our workflows, the ability to manage them effectively becomes paramount.

As we navigate these evolving user expectations, several key trends will define the next few years. These trends aren't just about what AI can do, but how it will be designed, regulated, and perceived. Each insight draws from our survey data and the growing discussions around AI future predictions and technology trends.

1. Radical customization and control

The "one-size-fits-all" approach is dead. Our survey results show that 51% of hybrid and tech workers demand customization options for their AI tools, compared to just 36% of the general population. This desire for control is a massive opportunity if new tools are tailored to this desire.

2. A demand for AI transparency

Users are becoming more sophisticated. They are no longer satisfied with "magic" answers. A staggering 58% report feeling that AI-generated answers have steered their opinion, raising questions like "what is AI bias?" as well as concerns about AI hallucination and how information is sourced.

This push for transparency means that platforms will need to show their work. Users will want to know why an AI made a certain recommendation or how it arrived at a particular conclusion. This is about building trust. Without it, even the most advanced technology will face an uphill battle for adoption.

3. The rise of the environmental cost

A surprising and powerful new factor is emerging in the AI conversation: sustainability. Our survey found that 57% are concerned about the energy required to power AI systems. The environmental footprint of technology is no longer a niche issue. It's core to conversations about AI’s (and the world’s) future.

Consumers are starting to hold tech companies accountable for their operational impact. This means that efficiency and responsible resource management will become key differentiators. It’s a trend that extends beyond AI to all the digital tools we use daily.
