What happens when efficiency meets engineering instinct? Meet the browser with bottom tabs.
For Smeet, a QA Software Engineer at Shift, it led to one of the most unconventional setups we’ve seen yet — one that proves the smallest tweaks in your browser customization can make a surprisingly big difference.
Smeet’s setup at a glance
- Spaces: Work/Developer, Side Hustle, Personal
- Apps: GitHub, Google Calendar, Slack, YouTube, photo editing tools
- Template: Maverick layout, customized into a bottom-right command center for faster navigation
- Favorite detail: Tabs along the bottom and apps in the corner to reduce pointer travel and boost comfort

Building the Shift browser setup
When Smeet first joined Shift, he started like most new users: by choosing one of the pre-made templates, “The Maverick”. But as his screen setup evolved, he noticed something most people never think about: how far his mouse had to travel.
“My pointer naturally sits in this little triangle at the bottom right. That’s my busy zone. Most chat boxes and action buttons are there, so I moved everything—my tabs, apps, even my search box—to fit that flow.”
The result is a layout where tabs sit along the bottom and apps are tucked neatly in the lower-right corner. It’s not the kind of browser you’d expect from a developer; it’s a design born from observation, not aesthetics. By reducing how often his cursor zigzags across the screen, he’s found a more comfortable rhythm online.
“It makes browsing feel lighter. You actually feel less tired after a day online.”
Spaces that mirror your life
Smeet’s browser isn’t just efficient; it’s a reflection of his many roles online. His Work Space keeps GitHub, Mixpanel, and Google Calendar open side by side, so he can stay on top of builds and meetings without flipping between tabs. His Side Hustle Space is dedicated to firstadvice.ca, an AI-powered project helping students invest smarter. And his Personal Space is where he relaxes, a mix of motorcycle videos, flight tutorials, and the occasional photo edit.
Each Space feels like its own room: one for work, one for passion, one for play. That separation helps Smeet switch gears throughout the day, proving that structure doesn’t limit creativity.
Favorite features
Beyond the ergonomic genius of his layout, Smeet’s favorite feature is how Shift handles apps and accounts. He loves being able to add multiple versions of the same app without logging in and out. “If I want another Slack account, I just add it with a different domain,” he says. “Everything stays separate, which is great for managing different parts of my life.”
He’s also quick to call out one of Shift’s most underrated tools: safe browsing and download scanning. Most browsers advertise speed or aesthetics, but Smeet appreciates how Shift quietly protects him in the background.
“It’s one of those things you don’t notice until it saves you,” he says.

The Hidden Productivity Hack: Spaces For Every Part of Your Life
Your browser might be silently sabotaging your focus. Here’s how using Spaces can help reduce digital chaos and make focus feel effortless again.
Read MoreMore than just a browser
Before Shift, Smeet’s workflow was scattered across multiple Chrome windows, background apps, and half-hidden Slack threads. Now, everything he needs lives in one window. He calls it his “one-window solution,” and it’s exactly that: a setup that simplifies his day without sacrificing flexibility.
It’s the kind of Shift story we love most: not about flashy add-ons or tab counts, but about the small, thoughtful changes that make online life a little smoother. Sometimes the best way to work faster is to stop moving so much.
