Changing your Gmail theme to a preset option

If you aren't yet ready to commit to a personal wallpaper, you can use one of the professional themes Gmail already has preloaded.

  1. Launch Shift and go to your Gmail inbox.
  2. Click the gear icon in the top-right corner to open Quick Settings.
  3. Under the Theme section, click View all.
  4. Pick your theme—whether you want a nature scene or a plain blue background, you can have it.

Note: Gmail dark mode is also available and is far easier on the eyes during late-night sessions. It looks especially clean when paired with Shift’s native Dark Mode.

Using one of your own photos to create a theme

Uploading your photo to Google Photos

To use a personal photo as a theme, it must first be uploaded to your Google Photos library. For the best results, use a high-resolution image that's at least 1920×1080 pixels.

  1. In Shift, click on the Google Services drop-down menu (the downward arrow icon) and select Photos.
  2. On the right of the search bar, click Upload (or + Import).
  3. Choose the photo you want to use from your computer and wait for it to sync.

Applying the uploaded photo to your Gmail theme

Once the photo has uploaded, you can apply it to your Gmail background.

  1. Return to your Gmail inbox in Shift.
  2. Click on the gear icon and select View all under Themes.
  3. Click My Photos in the bottom-left corner of the window.
  4. Select the photo you want as your theme and hit Select (or Insert).
  5. Refine your look: You can adjust the Blur to reduce distractions, use the Vignette slider to darken the corners, or change the Text Background to light or dark for better contrast.
  6. Hit Save to apply the changes.

Don't forget that you can set each of your Gmail accounts in Shift Browser to a different theme to keep your work and personal lives visually separate.
