The Internet’s invisible footprint
Digital technology and the internet are responsible for more global greenhouse gas emissions than the entire aviation industry. This “digital carbon footprint” might not have a physical form, but its environmental impact is massive.

Measure your digital carbon footprint in Shift
See how much CO2 your apps, extensions, and browsing produce. Say hello to the Carbon Meter, a digital carbon footprint calculator built into Shift.
Every search, website, app, and extension is carbon-neutral in Shift
Turn your impact into support for climate projects
Using CO2 measurements from the Carbon Meter, we invest in climate projects to offset the footprint of our browser and make an impact as a community.

The Great Bear Forest Carbon Project
This project protects millions of hectares of old-growth rainforest, reduces carbon emissions, and supports Indigenous-led stewardship. Proceeds from carbon credits fund conservation and community development in local First Nations.

Advancing Low Carbon Cement
By replacing traditional cement with smarter alternatives (natural pozzolan, fly ash, and bottom ash), this carbon-capture cement gives new life to industrial by-products, supporting a circular economy and greener construction.

How does it work?
The Carbon Meter estimates emissions from the energy used to load websites, stream content, and move data across networks and devices, based on regional energy sources. Shift can only measure activity within the browser: offline processing, AI, and local device power draw are excluded.
Your privacy stays protected
The Carbon Meter delivers personalized carbon estimations while adhering to the same strict privacy policies and encryption that protects your data in Shift.

Your data is anonymous
Data is aggregated for carbon estimation. No personally identifiable information is gathered or stored.

We can’t see your content
Shift cannot see the contents of any webpage you visit or personal inputs, messages, emails, or interactions.

No third parties
Data is hosted internally and secured in accordance with our Privacy Policy. It does not get sent to third parties.

What’s the cost of an unsustainable internet?
Global internet use consumes an estimated 2.6 trillion litres of water annually. That's the equivalent of filling over 1 million Olympic-size swimming pools.
