With the popularity of compact SUVs, every manufacturer has its unique take on the segment.
And Volkswagen's no different, with their stylish, well-engineered, and affordable entry: the Tiguan.
While many midsize SUVs may offer excellent fuel economy and reliability, sometimes they don't have much in the way of personality. But the Tiguan bucks this trend with its clean lines and European sensibilities, proving that you don't have to spend luxury car prices for top-rate handling and elegance.
With the Tiguan, Volkswagen demonstrates its ability to craft a refined crossover SUV while still offering it at a reasonable starting price.
Let's look at the Volkswagen Tiguan SUV and its price, trim level, reliability, and performance.
Volkswagen Tiguan price and trim levels
Volkswagen has given the Tiguan a handsome styling update, with LED headlights, a digital cockpit, restyled bumpers and grille, a steering wheel with touch-sensitive controls, and sharp-looking wheels.
Tiguan variants include the S, SE, SE R-Line Black, and SEL R-Line.
The Volkswagen Tiguan S has an MSRP of $27,490 and includes the features mentioned above and a standard front-wheel-drive powertrain.
The $30,990 SE model adds semi-autonomous driving, power rear liftgate, lane-keeping assistant, and 18-inch wheels. You also have the option of a panoramic sunroof that costs $1,200.
At $33,800, the SE R-Line Black offers sporty styling additions like black accents on the roof rails, body-color side sills, R-Line badges and bumpers, and 19-inch wheels. Also included are parking sensors and 15-color ambient interior lighting.
The top-of-the-line SEL R-Line starts at $38,165 and has standard 4Motion all-wheel drive, 20-inch alloy wheels, and R-Line styling touches.
All models come with Volkswagen's turbocharged four-cylinder engine that produces an excellent blend of power and economy. With VW's experience designing turbocharged engines, it makes a solid 184 horsepower and 221 lb-ft of torque that also returns excellent gas mileage.
The S, SE, and SE R-Line Black come standard with front-wheel drive, but you can add 4Motion all-wheel drive for increased traction in snow and rain.
And every trim level, other than the base, comes with adaptive cruise control, lane-keeping assist, touch-sensitive climate control, and the connectivity of Apple Carplay and Android Auto.
Another option that adds to the Tiguan's safety and convenience is the IQ Drive safety features suite. The package includes blind-spot monitoring and forward-collision warning, optional third-row seating, and keyless entry.
And the Tiguan's roomy interior provides plenty of legroom and cargo space, with up to 65.3 cubic feet on third-row equipped models.
What isn't on the spec sheet is the Tiguan's fun-to-drive quality that mirrors its stablemate, the GTI. With its controlled, smooth suspension and accurate steering, the Tiguan traverses roads easily while also delivering good ride comfort.
The new VW Tiguan may be an excellent SUV, but buying a used SUV like a 2019 Tiguan can save you thousands. However, locating one in excellent condition can be a hassle. Volkswagen Tiguan reliability
When you purchase a VW Tiguan, whether new or used, you know it’s a dependable SUV that’ll meet your needs. J.D. Power research supports that by giving the 2019-2022 Tiguan a consumer rating in the high 70s for each of those model years. In fact, the 2019 Tiguan received an 81 out of 100 “great” rating for quality and reliability, putting it near the top of its class for reliability and craftsmanship.
J.D. Power bases quality scores on feedback from owners, while dependability scores consider the ownership experience over three years.
Volkswagen Tiguan SUV performance
With its spirited turbo engine, taut suspension, and smooth-shifting automatic transmission, the VW Tiguan makes every drive fun.
The turbocharged four-cylinder engine has plenty of low-end torque and provides a nice get-up-and-go when you pull away from a stoplight.
Although it won't win a drag race with a sports car, it feels quick as you accelerate and ride around town.
You might only wish for extra horsepower during highway merges, but the performance is more than adequate nevertheless.
Volkswagen Tiguan SUV fuel economy
The Volkswagen Tiguan SUV provides a nice blend of performance and economy with its excellent turbocharged four-cylinder engine.
Newer Tiguans equipped with an FWD powertrain have the best gas mileage, returning 23/26/30 miles per gallon in city, highway, and combined driving.
When optioned with 4Motion AWD, the Tiguan loses one mile per gallon in each category, for the still respectable figures of 22/29/25 for city/highway/combined.
And if you want to take advantage of an excellent deal on the pre-owned market, a 2019 VW Tiguan still achieves great miles per gallon of 21/29/24 when driving in the city, on the highway, or during a combination of both.
Volkswagen Tiguan SUV in summary
The Volkswagen Tiguan SUV brings plenty of utility, comfort, and economy while still offering a good amount of driving enjoyment.
While other SUVs may work just fine for everyday tasks and road trips, the Volkswagen Tiguan SUV adds fun to the equation with its tuned suspension, peppy engine, and excellent transmission.
With its sleek European styling, tasteful interior, and optional high-tech features like semi-autonomous driving and 15 color ambient interior lighting, the Tiguan represents a unique choice when shopping for an SUV.
The SE R-Line Black and SEL R-Line provide extra style as you cruise down the boulevard with large diameter alloy wheels, special R-Line badges, and other distinctive exterior details.
If you need the additional traction and safety of all-wheel drive, Volkswagen's tried and true 4Motion system keeps the Tiguan glued to the road no matter the weather.
And the Tiguan does all of that while going easy on your wallet when it's time to fill up the tank by obtaining excellent gas mileage for any trip.
