Typically using all-wheel drive and with plenty of cargo space, modern SUVs let you keep moving whether there’s snow, rain, or a dirt road in your path.
But the Mazda CX-9 offers a more sporty yet well-rounded take on the SUV, with an adept chassis, good acceleration, three-row seating, and everyday usability.
What makes the CX-9 a good choice when shopping for a family SUV? Here’s our Mazda CX-9 review with all of the details.
2022 Mazda CX-9 price and what’s new
For 2022, Mazda offers the CX-9 in six trim levels:
- Sport — $36,505 MSRP
- Touring — $38,655 MSRP
- Touring Plus — $42,885 MSRP
- Carbon Edition — $44,805 MSRP
- Grand Touring — $45,665 MSRP
- Signature — $48,435 MSRP
Reassuring for any CX-9 buyer is that all 2022 editions now come standard with all-wheel drive for excellent traction in any road condition.
New for 2022 is the Touring Plus model, which blends the attributes of the Touring trim with high-end features like black 20-inch wheels, aluminum finish roof rails, ventilated front seats, power-adjustable driver’s seat, a frameless rearview mirror, and a black grille.
If you’re trying to decide on the best trim level for you, the Touring version gives you plenty of features at a great value. The Touring trim comes standard with keyless entry, push-button start, leather upholstery, power rear liftgate, and adjustable front seats.
For additional technology and passenger comfort, the Touring Premium package provides a Bose audio system, second-row captain’s chairs, SiriusXM Satellite Radio, third-row USB ports, front and rear parking sensors, second-row sunshades, and fog lamps.
If you decide to purchase a pre-owned Mazda CX-9, you’ll still drive away in an excellent SUV with many of the same attributes as the 2022 version. With the second-generation CX-9 in production since the 2016 model year, there are plenty on the used market to choose from, and you can save thousands.
Shopping for a used crossover SUV like a Mazda CX-9 or Honda CR-V can be a hassle. Driving around town and looking at different vehicles is time-consuming and may not be productive. Even though an advertisement looks nice, how can you know a pre-owned SUV isn’t hiding mechanical issues? And stressful negotiating can take the fun out of buying a new-to-you SUV. But when you buy a used SUV from Shift, you don’t have to worry about any of that.
You can buy any of Shift’s cars directly online from the comfort of your home, know it has no hidden issues (from our 150-point inspection) and get a fair, up-front price. Shift’s website has a large selection of fully inspected cars located across the country that are ready to go. The website is user-friendly, and you’ll be able to find various makes and models to suit your needs and budget. Whether you want a Ford, Subaru, or Volkswagen, Shift has what you need.
Mazda CX-9 engine and performance
Typically, midsize SUVs like the Mazda CX-9 use a V6 engine. But Mazda went with a turbocharged four-cylinder engine for an improved combination of power and fuel economy.
The CX-9 uses a turbocharged 2.5-liter Skyactiv-G engine that produces 250 horsepower and 310 lb-ft of torque routed through a 6-speed automatic transmission. While those are excellent specs, the Skyactiv-G engine also provides a car-like fuel economy of 20 mpg city and 26 mpg highway.
With its Skyactiv-G engine and athletic chassis, the CX-9 provides acceleration and handling closer to a sports car than a typical SUV. The tuned suspension feels taut yet comfortable, and the accurate steering routes your every input to the road.
Mazda CX-9 interior
The Mazda CX-9 interior features top-rate materials and build quality for a luxurious, comfortable atmosphere.
Surfaces made of brushed aluminum and soft-touch plastic add an upscale sensibility that rivals more expensive European makes and models.
And if you go for the Mazda CX-9 Signature trim, Rosewood and Nappa leather make things even more luxurious.
When you need to haul gear or groceries, the CX-9’s second and third-row seats fold flat, making for a spacious open storage area.
The CX-9 has plenty of technology and connectivity with its infotainment system and 10.3-inch touchscreen. Standard infotainment features include Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, Bluetooth, and HD Radio.
And the Mazda Connected Services suite keeps you up to date with essential information like telematics and vehicle status, along with perks like remote locking and remote start.

Mazda CX-9 safety features
The National Highway Transportation Safety Administration (NHTSA) gave the CX-9 a top crash test rating of five stars. And the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) awarded it Top Safety Pick. With those results, you know you’re secure wherever you drive the Mazda CX-9.
Besides that, Mazda’s excellent driver-assistance technologies help you detect and avoid collisions.
Standard driver’s assistance features include:
- Lane-departure warning with lane-keeping assist
- Automated emergency braking with pedestrian detection
- Adaptive cruise control
