You have many options when you're in the market for the best midsize sedan for your specific needs.

Some makes and models offer rock-solid reliability, good fuel economy, and abundant safety features. At the same time, they may lack excitement and performance on the road.

Other midsize sedans may provide excellent acceleration, roadholding, and style, yet their day-to-day practicality falls short.

But the Mazda 6 has an ideal mixture of everyday usability, ride quality, appealing looks, and sports-car performance for drivers who want it all, with different trim levels to suit every kind of driver.

Here's our Mazda 6 review to help you choose which one fits your needs best.

Mazda 6 price and what's new

For the 2021 model year, Mazda offered the 6 in several trim levels.

  • Mazda 6 Sport — $25,470 MSRP
  • Mazda 6 Touring — $28,070
  • Mazda 6 Grand Touring — $31,170
  • Mazda 6 Grand Touring Reserve — $$33,670
  • Mazda 6 Carbon Edition — $33,945
  • Mazda 6 Signature — $36,895

The Mazda 6 Grand Touring brings a powerful, turbocharged four-cylinder engine for strong acceleration and passing power. It also includes a leather-wrapped steering wheel with paddle shifters, Apple CarPlay capability, and a Bose audio system.

The Mazda 6 Carbon Edition is an appearance package that adds 19-inch wheels, black exterior details, and a Polymetal Grey paint finish for a sleek look on the boulevard.

While a new Mazda 6 features reasonable pricing, you can save thousands when buying one pre-owned.

For example, on Shift's easy-to-use website, you can find many prior-year Mazda 6's priced under $20,000 and in excellent condition. And with Shift's best-in-industry service contracts, you get the great pricing of a used car with the reassurance of a new car warranty.

Not only that, but you can buy any of Shift's cars directly online from the comfort of your home, know it has no hidden issues (from our 150-point inspection), and get a fair, up-front price. Shift's website has a large selection of fully inspected cars, trucks, SUVs, and crossovers located across the country that are ready to go. And if you need to finance, we have that covered too.

Shift works with a network of trusted lenders who compete for your business, so you get the best deal on financing. If you have low credit, don't worry because we welcome co-signers. Whether you want a Mazda 3, Volkswagen Golf, or a Subaru Outback, Shift has what you need.

Mazda 6 engine

The Mazda 6 uses four-cylinder engines with good horsepower specs and excellent fuel economy.

On the front-wheel-drive Mazda 6, you can choose between two 2.5-liter four-cylinder Skyactiv-G engines: a conventional powertrain or a turbocharged engine.

The naturally aspirated version makes a potent 187 horsepower and 186 lb-ft of torque, while the upgraded turbocharged engine raises those specs to a hefty 250 horsepower and 320 lb-ft of torque.

The base engine has an EPA-rated 26 mpg city and 35 mpg highway, while the turbo is good for slightly less at 23 mpg city and 31 mpg highway.

But if you decide on a pre-owned Mazda 6, you'll still have a highly engineered, powerful motor under the hood because the 2018 and newer Mazda 6 use the same powertrains as the 2021 editions. However, previous editions of the turbo engine have a little less torque, at 310 lb-ft.

Whichever engine you decide on, it transfers power to the ground via a smooth-shifting six-speed automatic transmission.

And aside from its internal combustion engine, the Mazda 6 uses an innovative regenerative braking system, i-ELOOP, that captures electrical power and stores it in a capacitor. The car then uses this stored energy to power various components like the steering and HVAC system.

Mazda 6 interior

The Mazda 6 interior features a modern, sophisticated design that rivals European luxury cars, providing performance and comfort beyond its price.

Build quality and materials are first-rate, offering a pleasant environment no matter the length of the trip. Despite its appealing styling and taut proportions, the Mazda 6 has plenty of legroom, headroom, and cargo capacity. The spacious trunk can fit six carry-on bags or 17 with the rear seats folded down. So you'll have ample room no matter where you go.

The Mazda 6 uses a knob to control its infotainment system, similar to many high-end sports sedans costing thousands more. Every trim level of the Mazda 6 features Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, so you can listen to your favorite tunes wherever you drive. And for the ultimate connectivity, wireless Apple CarPlay is optional.

Mazda 6 safety features

The 2021 Mazda 6 achieved a five-star crash test rating from the National Highway Transportation Safety Administration (NHTSA) and Top Safety Pick from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS), repeating accreditations the Mazda 6 received in 2018.

Aside from crash testing, the Mazda 6 comes with standard driver-assistance technology and the optional i-ACTIVSENSE, a suite of additional safety measures.

Driver's assistance features on the Mazda 6 include:

  • Standard blind-spot monitoring and rear cross-traffic alert
  • Standard forward-collision warning and automatic emergency braking

Mazda 6 review in summary

The Mazda 6 offers a unique combination of practicality, style, and performance. It's a vehicle with the styling of expensive European sedans and the road manners of a sports car, and best of all, you can save thousands by purchasing a used edition from Shift rather than leasing a new one from a dealer.

Mazda's innovative features like its powerful and efficient Skyactiv-G engines, i-ELOOP energy recovery, and knob-controlled infotainment provide you with horsepower, efficiency, and convenience.

The Mazda 6 uses exterior styling with swooping bodywork and sleek lines for added elegance to your routine. And the tastefully designed interior is a comfortable environment whether you're on your way to the grocery store or taking a long weekend trip.

No matter where you drive, the Mazda 6 takes you there with an abundance of safety features, obtaining top ratings from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration and the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety.

And driver's assistance technology like forward-collision warning and automated emergency braking ensure you avoid collisions before they happen.

Whatever the best midsize sedan is to you, reliable, sporty, or both, there’s a Mazda 6 edition available.

Finding an excellent family sedan that combines safety and excitement at an affordable price is easier than ever.

When you want to buy a sporty midsize sedan like the Mazda 6, Toyota Camry, Honda Accord, or Hyundai Sonata, you'll probably want to sell your old car. But that takes time and energy, and it could be months before you find a buyer. But when selling your vehicle to Shift, there's no need to worry about any of that. All you'll have to do is enter the make, model, year, and mileage on Shift's easy-to-use website, and you'll instantly receive a purchase offer that's valid for seven days.

You can get a fair offer, better than at the dealership, driven by powerful machine learning algorithms and tons of data. And with Shift, there is no need to spend the extra time waxing and washing the car. A little dirt won't affect the quote as we fully detail the cars ourselves anyway before listing them for sale.
