What is BMW’s warranty coverage?

Every new vehicle leaves the factory with a warranty. This agreement covers certain mechanical parts and systems from manufacturing defects for a certain period.

Separate warranties protect different areas of each vehicle, such as bumper-to-bumper, emissions equipment, and external body panels. Each covers a set number of years and miles, whichever comes first.

BMW's basic new-vehicle limited warranty is for four years or 50,000 miles and guards you against defects in materials or workmanship. The BMW basic new-vehicle warranty applies to several areas, such as engine, transmission, and suspension. Should something break within the warranty period, BMW-certified technicians make the necessary repairs using genuine BMW parts, free of charge.

BMW's rust perforation warranty attests to their cars' high quality, robust construction, and paintwork, covering 12 years and unlimited miles.

And to ensure your BMW runs clean and keeps pollution to a minimum, their federal emission warranty runs for two years or 24,000 miles, whichever comes first.

When you purchase a new BMW, you also receive the extra perk of free regularly scheduled maintenance for the first three years or 36,000 miles with the BMW Ultimate Care Program. This helpful program ensures your BMW runs strong, covering oil changes, spark plugs, brake fluid, and more.

But what if your BMW is an older model with higher mileage that doesn't fall under these factory warranties? If you're in the market for a used BMW and want the reassurance of a warranty, Shift also has what you need. Shift offers additional protection plans that comprehensively cover your BMW regardless of its age or mileage so that you can drive mile after mile without worry.

What isn't covered by a BMW warranty?

While a BMW warranty protects many parts and systems, you're responsible for specific parts that degrade from regular wear and tear.

Items like brake pads and tires wear down over time and need replacement every few years. Depending on your local climate, this gives you a chance to customize your BMW with specific tires like snow or summer performance and add brake pads that suit your driving style.

Other exclusions include:

  • Interior trim
  • Damage from road salt corrosion
  • The use of non-factory replacement parts

Practices like regularly washing your car, using original factory parts, and staying up to date on service can all ensure you from future costly repairs.

So while the BMW manufacturer warranty is strong and largely guards you against major repairs, regular upkeep and care of your vehicle will provide an additional layer of protection.

BMW’s CPO vs. extended warranty

A BMW certified pre-owned warranty (CPO) and a BMW extended warranty offer attractive options for protecting your car. However, a BMW extended warranty goes one step further by keeping your vehicle covered for the long haul.

The BMW CPO warranty is similar to their basic new-vehicle warranty. When you purchase a certified pre-owned BMW, you receive the balance of the basic four-year or 50,000-mile warranty, with the option to extend coverage for an additional year and unlimited miles. For the duration of your coverage, BMW roadside assistance is there should you get a flat tire or need a jump start.

But if you want the ultimate coverage as you drive your BMW over the years, their extended warranty plans are the most comprehensive choice. With a BMW extended warranty, your vehicle's protected for up to seven years or 100,000 miles, whichever comes first, from its original in-service date.

BMW offers three choices for an extended warranty: Platinum Protection, Gold Protection, and Powertrain Plus. Though each plan is good for the same period, they differ in their levels of coverage.

Platinum Protection covers several core components, as well as select areas of the interior and exterior. Platinum Protection is available on new, used, and CPO vehicles.

Gold Protection also protects numerous core components and certain parts of the interior, exterior, and electrical system. You can purchase Gold Protection for new and used BMWs.

Powertrain Plus offers thorough coverage for your BMW's transfer case and induction systems, along with other select parts. You can buy Powertrain Plus for your new or used BMW.

In the market for a used BMW but want fuel efficiency to go along with performance? Shift's easy-to-use website features a wide selection of fully inspected BMWs. No matter where you live, you can purchase any of them from the comfort of your home. And you know you're getting a good deal with Shift's fair, no-haggle pricing powered by powerful machine-learning algorithms and tons of data.

Additional warranty choices

Though BMW offers excellent options through their new and used vehicle warranties, you also have other choices when seeking coverage.

Third-party extended warranties offer great insurance against future repairs but typically cost less than those from BMW, mainly because of the name recognition.

For instance, a Vehicle Protection Plan from Shift guards your car bumper-to-bumper, with items like the engine, electrical system, cooling system, and more all covered. And you also receive the perks of flat tire changes, jump starts, and emergency fuel if your tank runs dry while you're on the road.

BMW warranty coverage in summary

A German-engineered BMW is a technical tour de force, from the pistons to the braking system. And with proper care and maintenance, a BMW should provide mile after mile of driving pleasure.

But when you encounter mechanical problems, a BMW warranty covers almost anything major, provided your vehicle's within the coverage period.

Different levels of extended warranties from BMW – like Platinum, Gold, and Powertrain Plus – give you comprehensive coverage as the years go by, so you can drive worry-free and enjoy the ride.

But you also have the choice of seeking an extended warranty from a third party, which often offers similar levels of protection at a decreased cost.

The choice is up to you, but whichever you decide upon, a warranty gives you peace of mind.
